Your comments and suggestions have been quite helpful to me in creating Xbench, so feel free to email () with your ideas. Additionally, your donations are very much appreciated, and are used to pay for the bandwidth and hardware that runs the Xbench site.
A new Mac Pro would wound me almost irrevocably.
Older versions of Xbench did not attempt to automatically categorize machines. Version 1.1 and later should alleviate this issue.
Extremely high scores (over 200), appear to be due to particular machines that don't have hardware OpenGL support drawing "nothing" very quickly. I hope to resolve this issue in a future release.
It appears that there may be some driver problem with ATI driver installs on top of 10.2.3. It is rumored that 10.2.4 may cure this problem, as might newer drivers from ATI. Make sure to carefully check the driver's system requirements before installing new drivers. This issue appears to affect windowed OpenGL more than full-screen, so it may not be a significant problem for full-screen games.
Check to make sure your "Energy Saver" settings are set to "Highest Performance"
Check to make sure that no background processes, such as Spotlight, are accessing the disk.
Certain models appear to mis-report their cache speed — these particular models actually have 250 MHz caches.
No, not necessarily - the particular Western Digital installed in my machine is one of the faster ATA disks currently available, and offers transfer rates faster than many 10,000 RPM SCSI disks. Newer SCSI disks, such as the Seagate 15K.3 will be quicker still, but you will also spend a lot of money. Be sure to look up the specs for the drives you're interested in before assuming anything about a drive's performance. For the types of tests Xbench performs, you're looking for "average transfer rate", or a similar term. StorageReview.com also offers quite comprehensive reports on many different drives.
Yes, this should work just fine, provided your Safari proxy settings are configured correctly.
It depends on popular demand, and the amount of time I have available. I have a full time job, and can't get to everything at once. Be sure to send me an email with your suggestion. A donation with an attached note is even better.
These things are possible, but not soon.
